Dear Fellow Entrepreneur,

I recently read a very interesting post about lead generation, personal data and the responsibilities businesses have when using information about prospects.

It got me thinking — and asking a LOT of questions! 🤔

The biggest lesson I took from it is this: don’t become frightened of lead generation — become more intentional about how you do it.

Here are a few practical lessons I believe we can carry into our own businesses:

1. Know where your leads came from.
If you buy a list or use a prospecting tool, don’t just ask, “How many contacts do I get?” Ask how the information was obtained, what permission or lawful basis supports its use, and what you are allowed to do with it.

2. First-party relationships become even more valuable.
Someone voluntarily joining your email list or community, downloading your resource, making an enquiry, or becoming a customer gives you a much healthier foundation than trying to know everything about strangers.

This reinforces something we talk about here often: the importance of building our own community and audience.

3. AI doesn’t remove responsibility.
If AI can enrich a profile, identify somebody, personalise an email or score a lead, “the software did it” isn’t a good business principle. We still need to understand what we are asking technology to do.

4. Don’t confuse ACCESS with PERMISSION.
Just because information can be found, purchased or technically accessed doesn’t automatically mean every use of that information is appropriate or lawful.

5. Trust is part of marketing.
Ask yourself:

“If this prospect knew exactly how I obtained their information and why I’m contacting them, would I be comfortable explaining it?”

That isn’t a complete legal test, but I think it is an excellent integrity test — which connects beautifully with our recent conversations about character and integrity in business.

6. Privacy can become a competitive advantage.
Being able to say, “We respect your information and don’t misuse it,” can strengthen the trust people have in your business. Privacy doesn’t have to be viewed simply as another compliance headache.

And this brings several of our recent conversations together:

Technology tells us what we CAN do.
Law tells us some of what we MUST or MUST NOT do.
But our business values help us decide what we SHOULD do.

As we learn more about AI, automation, email marketing, lead generation and digital business, perhaps becoming better entrepreneurs isn't only about learning how to use more powerful tools.

It’s also about learning how to use those tools responsibly. ❤️

So, before you collect that lead… ask some questions! 🤔

Sometimes the lessons we learn in one area of business unexpectedly join the dots with everything else we’re building.

I hope this brings value to you especially with the addition of the cartoon above.
